Indonesia and Sexual Freedom

Indonesia is a country in Southeast Asia that is the most populous country with a Muslim-majority. It is a series of islands with many different ethnic groups and languages, and unique cultures that have come together over history to form the Indonesian identity. It is a great place with a lot of beauty, as almost any country has, however, it is also a country that is ruled in some parts by forms of Sharia law, meaning that it is not a very sexually free nation. LGBT people there do not feel very free to express themselves, and in an almost funny turn of events, the messaging app LINE had to remove LGBT friendly emojis from it’s store after it got a large number of complaints from Indonesian users. LGBT emoji include two guys holding hands, two and two girls holding hands. If Indonesians can’t even enjoy cute LGBT emojis, how will they enjoy the type of porn they want to watch?

This issue gets even deeper. Ismail Cawadu, the PR Spokesperson for the Ministry of Communications, not only praised LINE for working with the country to remove the “offending” emoji, but also said that WhatsApp is next on their list of apps to target. Over half of Indonesia’s population of 225 million people use this app, meaning that many Indonesians are exposed to these emoji every day.

It’s clear that Indonesia’s LGBT problem is bigger than just Emoji. The University of Jakarta officially distanced itself from an LGBT group on campus that was not officially sanctioned by the university, and the group itself was all but dismissed by Higher Education Minister Muhammed Nasir, who said “LGBT is not in accordance with the values and morals of Indonesia.” and then went so far as to say he forbids the existence of this group. The founders of this group said that they created it because many LGBT people in Indonesia have emotional difficulties due to a lack of support, and so they need a support network of peers who will love them unconditionally. Other, more liberal, government officials in Indonesia have said things that basically say that being gay is OK, but LGBT people should essentially remain invisible.

It’s sad that LGBT people in Indonesia likely can’t watch some hot gay porn that they want to see, or love and lust after whomever they want. There is a lot that straight and gay people can learn from LGBT porn, and anyone can find this type of XXX movie pretty hot. Hopefully soon Indonesia will catch up to other countries and see that love and sex are all good. Those are two things which can add positivity to the world, whether it’s between a man and a woman, a guy and a guy, a gal and a gal, three guys and a slut in a middle, a transgender woman and her boyfriend, or ten gay men in an ass fucking circle.
