Porn Tax to Pay for “The Wall”?

Politics takes center stage these days, and it’s stressful no matter which side of the aisle you agree with. One way that people tend to relax and take a load off from all this junk is to watch porn. A good orgasm can surely take your mind off things for quite a while. However, one politician wants to put politics and porn together to reach a political goal. Surely even the most politically uninformed person these days has heard talk of “the wall” that many want to build in the name of border security and homeland security. It caused a huge government shutdown and the outcome of the wall debate remains to be seen, mainly because building a giant wall is pretty dang expensive and no one can decide on how it should be funded. However, one politician has a solution for that!

Gail Griffin, a state senator in Arizona proposes that adults who wish to watch porn should have to pay a porn tax of $20. Now, $20 might not seem like a lot to some, but to others, $20 may be quite a lot of money for treats and treasures. Now, this is not simply a tax to punish people who like to watch porn. It does have a purpose. Gail proposes that this sin tax could be used to pay for the wall. Basically, how the bill works is that all adult content would be banned on ISPs in the state. Users can then prove they’re over 18, pay a fee and then access porn, similar to the age verification laws that recently passed in the UK.

John Stagliano, a porn legend, was quoted in an article on Engadget saying that porn is a popular target for lawmakers. He suggests that there are tons of other avenues for sin taxes for this purpose including tobacco products, and even payday loan companies. Many in the industry wonder why people hate the porn business so much when clearly it not only provides entertainment and valuable sexual release for tons of people, but also is a driver of technological innovation and has been since the invention of audio/visual media.

The problem with content bans like this is that it’s super easy to use a virtual private network (VPN) to get around any type of thing that bans you from seeing the type of content that you would like to see. So, they really aren’t effective once users get tech savvy enough to get around it. Overall, this law sounds silly to most porn fans and especially to the ones who are tech savvy enough to know it just won’t work. Regardless of what you think about politics, if you are interested in porn then you probably don’t like laws like this. Most people wouldn’t want to end up on a list of porn watchers, and they don’t want the government bothering to know what they are up to online.
