Tumblr’s Porn Ban Has Rough Start

Tumblr, an online blogging platform that, up until now, has probably been about 90% used for porn, recently banned porn. They unfortunately chose to start the ban on December 17th, which is also the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. The irony of the situation was not lost on many porn performers, most of whom consider themselves legal sex workers, many of whom used Tumblr to market themselves and just show the world who they are. So, how do you ban porn? Well, the thing is, that first you have to define porn in order to ban it. So, what exactly constitutes as real adult material? Many people were worried that queer, trans and general sexual health resources are going to get swept up in the fray, as well as just general pictures of completely appropriate yet pretty women, and with the roll out’s start, these worry warts were proven correct.

The problem seems to be that Tumblr is using an automated system to remove posts. So, pictures of toys like dolls, art pieces and even just beautiful women – fully clothed but perhaps with a bit of cleavage – are absolutely getting removed with no recourse for the users. The reason for the porn ban itself was said to be that Apple removed Tumblr from its app store because of too much adult content, however, some other people suspect it is also in part due to the FOSTA SESTA legislation which weakens section 230 of the Communications Decency Act and makes websites more responsible for what is posted on them by other users.

Many critics of the move also believe that this will end Tumblr’s reign of popularity. The platform has been a place where users could anonymously share and explore porn, where pornstars and strippers could share hot clips and pictures of themselves and where people could connect on sexual topics like fetishes and health questions. Sure some people also use it for art or other hobbies, but some critics believe the lack of adult content will cause people to boycott the site or they simply may not have a reason to visit it anymore, causing the site’s numbers to go down. Only time will tell how the porn ban will affect Tumblr, but for now, if you were a huge Tumblr user, keep your eye on Cumblr, a new startup that seeks to be an adult friendly version of Tumblr where you can even upload your old Tumblr content as long as you have saved it as a backup.

More and more sites are becoming hostile towards adult topics, which is scary to many porn fans. Porn should be something that people should be able to enjoy freely and anonymously. If they want to watch porn on legal topics and fetishes, why should they prevented from doing so? Everyone needs sexual pleasure and porn is one way to get that in our society which keeps people busy and working hard all the time. Let’s give people more pleasure and less rules through easy access to porn and sexual health topics instead of cutting them off from easy sexy fun.
